Job Summary
The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) at Auburn University seeks an experienced and dynamic instructor for asphalt training to join our nationally recognized team. The position requires a deep knowledge of asphalt materials testing, pavement construction practices, quality assurance, and pavement engineering principles.
This position supports NCAT's mission to advance asphalt pavement technology through education, applied research, and technology transfer. The successful candidate will assist in developing and delivering technician certification programs, professional short courses, and industry training workshops nationwide, while also contributing to research projects related to asphalt materials, mix design, pavement performance, and construction practices.
Essential Functions
- Develop, update, and maintain asphalt training materials, presentations, manuals, and online learning modules that align with FHWA, AASHTO, and state DOT standards.
- Deliver engaging instruction in classroom, laboratory, and field environments for asphalt technician certification programs, short courses, and specialized industry workshops.
- Travel to training sites nationwide to conduct instruction, demonstrations, and evaluations.
- Assist with applied research projects by contributing to test planning, data collection, analysis, and preparation of technical reports and presentations.
- Support workforce development and outreach initiatives, including webinars, blended learning courses, and the "Training In Your Pocket" video series.
- Collaborate with NCAT faculty, research engineers, technicians, and communication staff to ensure technical accuracy and consistent messaging in training and research deliverables.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with transportation agencies, universities, and industry partners through professional engagement and technical support.

Minimum Qualifications
Level V: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline and 8 years of experience in engineering and research practices and principles.
Level VI: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline and 10 years of experience in engineering and research practices and principles.
Substitution allowed for Experience: When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Excellent public speaking and teaching skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
- An independent work ethic with proven ability to manage multiple projects and travel assignments.
- Excellent writing, organizational, and analytical skills.
Minimum Technology Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with laboratory and field testing data.
Desired Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or eligibility to obtain one within two years.
- Experience working for or with a state or federal Department of Transportation (DOT) in asphalt materials, construction, or training programs.
- Demonstrated experience developing and teaching professional or technician-level training courses.
- Knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM testing standards for asphalt materials, mixtures, and construction quality assurance.
- Experience in creating or delivering online learning content, webinars, or video-based training.
Salary Range: $84,680 - $186,410
