Position Number: 00111913
Essential Job Duties:
This is a one-year specialty internship in Nephrology and Urology designed to provide advanced clinical training for veterinarians seeking focused experience in renal and urologic medicine, particularly those considering residency or academic career paths.
The internship consists of 40 weeks on the Nephrology and Urology clinical service and 12 weeks allocated to elective rotations and vacation. Elective time may include rotations in Extracorporeal Therapy, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Surgery, or other relevant services, as approved by faculty, allowing for both interdisciplinary exposure and professional development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clinical responsibilities include delivering advanced specialty-level patient care in nephrology and urology under faculty supervision; participating in diagnostic evaluation and medical management of acute and chronic kidney disease, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, glomerular disease, and obstructive uropathy; assisting with interventional urologic procedures and extracorporeal therapies; and managing inpatient and referral cases.
- The intern will provide consultations to in-house services and referring veterinarians and will maintain professional communication with clients and the referring community. Emergency service clinicians manage primary emergency intake, and critical care clinicians support unstable inpatients; however, the intern is expected to provide backup support to NU residents during assigned clinical rotations. Holiday coverage is shared equitably among clinicians on the service.
- Teaching responsibilities include active participation in clinical instruction of fourth-year veterinary students and house officers through case-based teaching, small-group rounds, and case discussions. The intern will attend and contribute to rounds preparation and participate in regular service meetings. The position also includes engagement with referring veterinarians to support service growth and foster strong collegial relationships within the regional veterinary community.
- The individual in this position will perform clinical duties on the Nephrology and Urology Service for 40 weeks per year. Primary responsibilities include management of hospitalized patients, evaluation of outpatient cases, receipt and coordination of referral cases, and provision of in-house and external consultations under faculty supervision.

Candidate must be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about nephrology and urology and teaching.

Candidate may have completed a rotating Small Animal Internship.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
