Network Field Position I

The Network Field Technician I will work under close supervision of the Network Field Technician II and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and remediation of the university’s data, video, audio, and low voltage cabling infrastructures. This includes cable installation, termination, and testing, as well as patch panel maintenance in communication closets and the Datacenter. This role supports the installation and maintenance of CCTV systems, emergency call boxes, Access Control Cabling, panic buttons, and wireless access points, including device mounting and cabling. The employee must possess the ability to work independently without supervision and requires demonstrated proficiency in the following areas: communication, professionalism, time management, organization, critical thinking, and reliability.

Job Duties:

  • Install, terminate, label, test, patch, and maintain the data, video, audio, and low-voltage network cabling infrastructure throughout the campus
  • Install, terminate, and test various types of cable, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, fiber optic, and coaxial cable
  • Patch, verify, and test network connectivity to switch ports
  • Properly utilize test equipment such as certifier, qualifier, OTDR, and Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to provide test results and troubleshoot various types of cabling methods
  • Properly utilize voltage meters to test and troubleshoot
  • Properly install, suspend, and support cables correctly utilizing cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, Bridal rings, Trapeze, or other local code-approved hardware hanging methods
  • Dress and organize cables neatly and securely according to industry standards
  • Assist with the installation of IT equipment in communication closets and Datacenter as required
  • Monitor the environmental condition of the Datacenter and communication closets, and report any issues to Facilities
  • Install, test, and maintain all UPS devices in the Datacenter and communication closets throughout campus
  • Install security cameras, wireless access points, and Access Control Cabling throughout campus as directed, including all required terminations
  • Properly install grounding and bonding of structured cabling systems and equipment
  • Perform fire-stopping procedures on firewalls and fire sleeves utilizing locally approved code materials and hardware
  • Properly build open frame wall racks, floor-mount vertical racks, and various wall and floor-mounted enclosures
  • Perform all requests for underground cabling locates and mark appropriately in a timely manner
  • Maintain the Emergency call boxes and cabling infrastructure between the call boxes and the network gateway devices
  • Manage and maintain the stockroom inventory of cabling, connectors, switches, and related equipment
  • Work with the Network Communications team to prioritize cabling project tasks, system maintenance, and end-user support
  • Contribute to FIT’s team effort by accomplishing other duties as assigned by the IT Leadership team

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or training in networking or cabling preferred
  • Basic knowledge of installing, terminating, and testing copper and fiber optic cable types and connectors

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work in outside environments for extended periods in any season
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Able to use basic power hand tools
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively across all levels of an organization to resolve technical support issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documentation
  • Must be capable of physical activity, including maneuvering around the building including communication closets, prolonged standing, repetitive bending, climbing, and lifting of at least 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of appropriate software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and IT ticketing applications
  • Perform job duties with the utmost integrity and adherence to institutional policy
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain a reliable and methodical approach to the support and documentation of complex network systems
