Systems Administrator
Tennessee State University Office of Technology Services invites applications for the role of Systems Administrator.
Position Summary:
The Systems Administrator is responsible for the daily administration, maintenance, and support of the university's server and virtual infrastructure environment. Reporting directly to the Sr. Systems Manager, this role ensures the reliability, performance, security, and availability of multi-user computer systems, including physical and virtual servers.
The Systems Administrator is accountable for the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of enterprise systems while maintaining cost efficiency and adherence to university standards. This position plays a critical role in ensuring system uptime, performance optimization, resource management, and cybersecurity compliance.
The Systems Administrator will respond to service requests and incidents through the university's TeamDynamix ticketing system and will collaborate closely with network, security, and applications teams to support institutional technology initiatives.
This is a full-time, on-site position aligned with the University's standard operating hours (M–F, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.). The candidate must be available to work evenings, weekends, or adjusted schedules as necessary to address maintenance windows or emergency support needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer and support enterprise server environments, including Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
- Manage and maintain virtualization platforms such as VMware and/or Microsoft Hyper‑V to ensure high availability and optimal resource utilization.
- Support and maintain Active Directory (AD), Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and identity management services in a Microsoft O365 environment.
- Administer Microsoft 365 (O365) services, including user provisioning, licensing, security policies, and hybrid integrations.
- Monitor system performance and availability using enterprise monitoring tools (e.g., Zabbix, Nagios), proactively identifying and resolving issues before service disruption occurs.
- Manage storage environments, including SAN and NAS systems, ensuring backup integrity, redundancy, and disaster recovery readiness.
- Implement and maintain security best practices, including patch management, vulnerability remediation, endpoint hardening, and compliance with university cybersecurity standards.
- Automate routine system administration tasks using scripting and infrastructure-as-code tools such as PowerShell, Ansible, or Terraform.
- Support cloud infrastructure and services, including AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain server hardware and software components.
- Troubleshoot system outages and performance issues, coordinating with other IT teams as needed.
- Respond to service requests and incidents through the TeamDynamix ticketing system in a timely and professional manner.
- Develop and maintain documentation for system configurations, procedures, disaster recovery plans, and troubleshooting guides.
- Assist with planning and implementation of infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and new technology deployments.
- Provide technical support and training to IT staff and campus stakeholders as needed.
- Participate in after-hours maintenance activities and on-call rotation as required.
