NHRP Senior Clinical Fellow

We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.

The Role

The Faculty of Medical Sciences invites applications from medical or dental graduates who are at or close to the end of their clinical specialty training and have their certificate of completion of training (CCT), or are within 6 months of their CCT at the time of application and would be considered eligible to be appointed as an honorary consultant in the NHS.

You will have an academic track record including a PhD or equivalent in relevant subject area, with ideally, experience of post-doctoral academic development such as provided by an NIHR Clinical Lecturer post or equivalent post-doctoral experience. You will have shown an ability to publish original research in field leading peer reviewed journals and an ability to secure research funding as principal or co-investigator. You will ideally have experience of teaching at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level and some experience of supervision of research students.

This post forms part of a clinical academic career development programme devised by Newcastle Health Research Partnership (NHRP) (https://newcastlehealthresearchpartnership.org/) the Academic Health Sciences Centre for the North East of England. The post will provide individuals looking to establish themselves as senior clinical academics over the next 5 years with academic and clinical time, mentorship and training to achieve research independence and clinical expertise.

The post represents a partnership between Newcastle University (NU), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH) and Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Mental Health Foundations Trust (CNTW) and St Oswalds Hospice. Applicants must have identified, in advance of applying, support from one of the above partners, a commitment to host them as an honorary consultant and to provide funding for 50% of their time (up to a maximum of 5 programmed activities for a full time equivalent, or pro rata for less than full time applicants) for their NHS clinical work. You should not yet have been appointed to a substantive consultant post in the NHS.

Along with the application form, please provide your CV as well as a covering letter outlining what you hope to achieve during the tenure of the Fellowship and how your programme of research work aligns to the strategic priorities of the partner organisations. We will require a letter from relevant Trust confirming funding for 5 clinical sessions.

Please see job details for further details.

For informal enquiries about the programme, please contact Professor Dave Jones, Director of NHRP Academy via David.Jones@ncl.ac.uk.

The University strives to be sector leading in our work on equality, diversity and inclusion. Please visit our EDI webpages for further information on our initiatives and policies which help to make our workplace fair, family friendly and genuinely inclusive.

This role is fixed term for 3 years.

Please note that if you are successful to this role, you will require a DBS and an Honorary Contract before you can commence in the role.
