ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

As a discipline within the School of Health Sciences, the Registered Nursing program is a two-year Associate Degree program fully approved by the California State Board of Registered Nursing and is subject to its regulations regarding the education and training of nurses. Successful completion of the program qualifies a student to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become licensed as a Registered Nurse.

DESCRIPTION:

Solano Community College is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Nursing faculty member with demonstrated expertise in Maternal Newborn Nursing. The successful candidate will contribute to the excellence of the Nursing Program through high-quality instruction, professional engagement, and active participation in curriculum and program development.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Nursing faculty member will teach theory and clinical courses within the areas of Maternal-Newborn and Medical-Surgical Nursing. Clinical assignments may be located in Fairfield, Vacaville, and/or Vallejo, in a variety of healthcare settings. Instructional responsibilities may also include online teaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction

  • Teach Nursing courses in both theory and clinical formats, consistent with program needs in Maternal Newborn Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing.
  • Serve as Content Expert as defined by the BRN regulations for Maternal Newborn Nursing
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines, program expectations, and Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations.
  • Prepare and deliver course materials, assignments, laboratory experiences, and examinations.
  • Evaluate student learning and clinical performance using established rubrics, standards, and professional competencies.

Curriculum & Program Development

  • Participate in curriculum development, revision, and program planning to support continuous improvement and alignment with BRN and ACEN accreditation standards.
  • Engage in course- and program-level assessment activities, including Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs).

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records and submit required documentation, reports, and administrative materials in a timely manner.
  • Serve on department, school, and campus committees as assigned.
  • Participate in department meetings, faculty development activities, and institutional initiatives.
  • Maintain regular office hours in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, student-centered, and equity-focused learning environment.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Supervise student learning in clinical settings and ensure adherence to clinical site policies, BRN regulations, and program outcomes.
  • Facilitate and manage on-campus simulation clinical experiences.
  • Provide regular, constructive feedback and document student performance and progression.
  • Coordinate clinical learning experiences by partnering with area healthcare facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in nursing OR Bachelor's degree in Nursing AND Master's degree in Health Education, Health Science, or related field.

  • Current, unencumbered California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • At least one year of direct patient care experience within the past five years in Maternal Newborn Nursing and/or Medical Surgical Nursing.
  • A sensitivity and desire to teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, including the disabled, who may have wide ranges of abilities.

Qualified candidates must possess:

  • A master's degree in Nursing; OR bachelor's degree in Nursing AND master's degree in health education or health science; OR the minimum qualifications as set by the California State Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher.
  • A current unencumbered California Registered Nursing License.
  • Qualifications are subject to approval by the California State Board of Registered Nursing.
  • If you do not meet the minimum qualifications exactly as stated above, you must request an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at the time of application. Equivalency is defined as possessing the general education for the degree and the major coursework for the degree or significant professional experience relevant to the position. Note: The above-mentioned licensure and any requirements set forth by the California State Board of Registered Nursing cannot be waived through equivalency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in a community college or higher education environment.
  • Current approval by the California Board of Registered Nursing in assigned teaching areas.
  • Experience in Maternal Newborn Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing.
    1. Willingness to remediate Medical Surgical Nursing if necessary.
  • Experience with Simulation and online (Canvas) learning platforms.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.

It is anticipated that first-round interviews will be conducted in person the week of February 23, 2026. Second-round interviews are tentatively set for the week of March 9, 2026. All dates are subject to change.

  • Able to address student equity through best-practice teaching methodologies.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory and clinical practice.
  • Use of computers, multimedia, course-management software, and other interactive technologies as teaching and learning tools.
  • Able to utilize multiple teaching methods/strategies needed to address the diverse learning styles/needs of students, including integration of interactive technologies to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.
  • Possess a commitment to teaching and providing a supportive learning environment to enhance student success and program completion.
  • Possess a willingness to take initiative in co-curricular activities, outreach and recruitment efforts, special events, and school projects.
  • Possess a willingness to participate in shared/participatory governance of the College.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-evaluate and effect change for personal growth and improvement, as well as an ability to accept constructive feedback.
  • Possess a willingness to participate in professional growth/development activities and lifelong learning.

WORK ENVIROMENT:

The recommended candidate(s) will work in a small office or larger room with multiple people, in a primarily sedentary nature, either sitting or standing. This role will require significant technology use, including long periods of looking at technology screens and entering information using a keyboard and/or mouse device. Interruptions are likely in large room settings and in small office settings. Frequent use of phone, email, and online meeting technology will be required to communicate with members of the campus community.

The physical demands described below are representative of those involved while performing the essential functions for this position.

  • Walking for extended periods of time during an eight-hour clinical rotation.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Assisting with lifting and/or moving patients during clinical rotations.
  • Exercising manual dexterity when utilizing medical equipment.

  • Competing foreground and background noises.
  • Emergency situations.
  • Extended hours spent in hospital settings.
  • Close contact with other medical personnel, student nurses, and patients.
