NYU Center for Disability Studies Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow
The NYU Center for Disability Studies (CDS) invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship, funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, on the theme of disability arts and arts accessibility. Under the directorship of Professor Mara Mills, CDS is launching "ASAP: Access for Small Arts Partnerships," a program that trains and pairs paid interns with small arts organizations in New York City to build capacity in digital and physical accessibility for curation, archiving, and arts distribution. The postdoctoral fellow will assist in the development and coordination of this initiative.
Starting in September 2025, the postdoctoral fellowship offers an annual salary of $70,000, medical benefits, and additional university benefits. The selected postdoc will teach one course each year on the theme of disability arts or arts and museum accessibility. The postdoc will also help plan and facilitate a one-week summer workshop on creative access for interns and arts administrators. The postdoc will be expected to participate in the bimonthly events sponsored by the NYU Center for Disability Studies.
The NYU Center for Disability Studies is a cross-school Provostial Center, founded in 2017, that promotes disability scholarship, artistry, and activism through interdisciplinary research, local and international community collaborations, a public event series, and an undergraduate Disability Studies minor. More information can be found at the CDS website: https://disabilitystudies.nyu.edu/.
Ideal candidates are early career scholars with research or other relevant expertise in disability arts or creative access (including print and digital accessibility; tactile models; plain language writing; or disability justice-informed curation). Candidates should also have a strong publication record and/or curatorial experience. Exceptional doctoral students, who have completed all of the requirements for a Ph.D. degree and are awaiting formal conferral of the degree, are also welcome to apply.
NYU Center for Disability Studies postdocs are expected to reside in the New York area during the academic terms. Candidates are requested to submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a writing sample (no more than 30 pages) and three reference letters. All application materials must be submitted electronically via the NYU job posting. Review of applications will begin as soon as possible, and will continue to be accepted until the position has been filled.
