Occupational Health and Safety Associate

With general oversight and direction from the Director, Occupational Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Associate works within a multi-disciplinary group of environmental health and safety professionals and is responsible for assigned health and safety programs, and other injury prevention projects for the Ithaca campus and outlying facilities, except for the Weill Medical College & Qatar. The primary function of the position is to provide coordination and supportive duties for the administration and maintenance of occupational health, safety, and injury prevention programs and initiatives. The incumbent will develop and implement initiatives, procedures, programs, and training that promote a safe, healthful, and compliant environment for all faculty, staff, and students. Additionally, the incumbent will perform inspections, provide industrial hygiene services, technical support, and compliance guidance to university personnel and their operations.

We require these qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational health and safety, toxicology, safety sciences, public health, or related science, or a bachelor’s degree in a scientific field with health and safety work experience, with up to 2-3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the university; must be able to read, understand, and interpret regulations.
- Knowledge of OSHA’s Construction, General Industry and Recordkeeping.
- General Knowledge of industrial hygiene (IH) equipment and basic sampling procedures (classroom experience is acceptable).
- Operational skills in various MS-Office based computer programs and database management.
- Ability to work independently and maintain a close attention to detail.
- Excellent time and project management skills to routinely deal with multiple projects and program needs.
- Commitment to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to pass a background check as required by Cornell University.
- Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License. Out-of-state employees must obtain and show proof of a NYS license within 30 days of starting employment.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including (but not limited to),, hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, and protective clothing and respiratory protection.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical for the use of respiratory protection equipment and for hazardous materials emergency responder work and the ability to wear an SCBA.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:
- Board certification in a recognized professional health and safety discipline, ASP, CSP, CRSP, CIH, CHST, CHMM Practical knowledge in Process Safety Management (PSM) or relevant certification in PSM (e.g. CCPSC)
- Experience with EHS management systems such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, OSHAS 18000, ANZI Z0, or VPP.
- Knowledge of NYS Health and Safety Code Rules, NYS Asbestos management and ACGIH TLVs and BEIs, is a plus.
- Experience in an academic or research institution setting and working in a diverse culture strongly desired.
- Experience working directly with external agencies and organizations (OSHA, DOL, NIOSH, NFPA, FM Global). Strong knowledge and experience with safety compliance management programs.
- Experience in MS-SharePoint
- Experience in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response activities and training.
- Strong leadership skills and knowledge of organizational change.
