About the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering currently has 44 faculty members and an enrollment of about 1900 undergraduate and 260 graduate students. The Department offers ABET accredited B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering; M.S., Master of Engineering, and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in Materials Science and Engineering. Also, the B.S. and the M. Eng degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering are offered. The Department has research focus areas in Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Materials, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Mechanics, Vibrations, & Acoustics, Robotics & Controls, and Thermal-Fluids & Energy. Job Overview

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati invites tenured candidates at the rank of full professor to apply for the endowed Ohio Eminent Scholar and L. W. Scott Alter Chair Professor in Advanced Manufacturing position. The position is intended for a senior faculty member with an extensive track record of research excellence who will be able to push the envelope of manufacturing to address new challenges in the field. The position benefits from a generous chair endowment, reduced teaching load consistent with the research focus of the position, and a competitive salary commensurate with candidate experience. Additionally, the MME Department provides unique opportunities to grow a world-class interdisciplinary research program in manufacturing bridging the disciplines of mechanical engineering, materials science, and industrial and systems engineering. The College of Engineering and Applied Science at UC has pioneered the mandatory cooperative experience for engineers since 1906 and has excellent connections with the industrial sector, both locally and nationally. Cincinnati has been identified as one of the most livable cities in America, situated in a tri-state metropolitan area with a population of 2.2 million and with excellent cultural and entertainment opportunities.

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop a world-class research program in manufacturing by attracting extramural funding, advising graduate and undergraduate students, and publishing research results in professional journals.
  • Build externally funded joint ventures (such as multi-investigator research teams and centers) as well as strengthen partnerships with industries through research collaborations and workforce development initiatives.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate engineering courses specific to their specialty areas, including but not limited to Mechanical, Materials, or Industrial and Systems Engineering, within manufacturing.
  • Participate in internal and external service activities such as editorial/peer review, career mentoring for students and junior faculty, and serving on departmental, college and university committees.

Minimum Requirements

Per the Ohio Board of Regents Eminent Scholars Program, Ohio Eminent Scholars must be new hires to Ohio universities and may not be currently employed within the State of Ohio.

Additionally, all of the following are required prior to effective date of appointment:

  • Doctoral Degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field;
  • Currently hold a tenured full professor rank position;
  • 12 years of research experience subsequent to the PhD in academia, government or industry in the area of Mechanical, Materials, or Industrial and Systems Engineering or a closely related field.
