The University of Houston Tillman J Fertitta Family College of Medicine (UHCOM) at the University of Houston announces a non-tenure track, open rank, Clinical Faculty in Medical Education and Course Co-Director. This faculty will serve as a course co-director in the Physician, Patients, and Populations (PPP) Course, which spans 60 pre-clerkship weeks with 4 hours of weekly instruction. This course is critical to our mission of preparing physicians to deliver primary care in underserved communities with an emphasis on care that is evidence-based, high-value, and team-based. Topics within this course include physician-patient communication, physical diagnosis, medical interviewing, clinical reasoning and decision-making, professionalism, medical ethics, social determinants and health disparities, population health, health informatics, quality improvement and safety, health systems and policy, interprofessional team-based care, cross-cultural care, behavioral health, and evidence-based medicine. The faculty position will contribute to activities related to clinical skills, which includes interviewing, physical exam, documentation, and simulation.

Primary Responsibilities

Duties of the position will include, but are not limited to Curriculum Development, Content Delivery, and Scholarship.

  • Serve as a course co-director for PPP and other relevant courses.
  • Develop and deliver the PPP course by collaborating with faculty at the college of medicine and university as well as the broader Houston community.
  • Partner with the Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL) to develop, deliver, and assess simulation activities.
  • Develop and deliver clinical skills sessions in PPP, including directing and facilitating small-group learning sessions and other active, applied learning and assessment strategies.
  • Develop and oversee formative and summative assessment of student performance.
  • Assign and submit final grades.
  • Identify, coordinate, and evaluate opportunities for student scholarship and service-learning opportunities
  • Conduct ongoing quality assurance and semi-annual evaluation to assess effectiveness and areas for improvement.
  • Share evaluation outcomes through internal reports, conference presentations and publications
  • Identify, orient, develop, and provide feedback to faculty in the course

Service Related to Tillman J Fertitta Family College of Medicine (TJFFCOM)

  • Participate in medical school accreditation activities.
  • Provide constructive feedback to mentees, staff, and students.
  • Contribute to relevant TJFFCOM committees.
  • Foster collaborative and supportive relationships with colleagues and students.

Clinical

  • Evaluate and treat patients.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team-based care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning.
  • Ability to succinctly and effectively convey complex ideas through oral and written.
  • Medical Degree from an allopathic or osteopathic medical college.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification in a primary care specialty.
  • Experience with an electronic health record.
  • Experience teaching topics included within PPP and administrative responsibilities within an academic environment.
  • Experience teaching medical students.
  • Experience building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational or research objectives.
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curriculum.
  • Experience with curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Experience with survey design and data analysis.
  • Experience using different teaching methods which might include case-based learning, ‘flipped classrooms’, problem-based learning, interactive large group presentations, and audience response systems.

Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD/DO, dependent on the position, from an accredited institution. Official transcripts are required for faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess an unrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in their specialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must be obtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. All positions within the University of Houston System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Physician applicants are required to provide documentation of current licensure and board certification as part of their application materials.
