The Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is currently seeking a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, who could possibly hold additional administrative posts as the Medical Director and Section Chief of the Clinical Pathology department at Wellstar MCG Health. This position ensures that laboratory testing meets the highest accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety standards while aligning with institutional goals. The director will lead regulatory compliance, quality management, laboratory accreditation, and clinical decision support efforts. The role involves collaboration with hospital leadership, laboratory staff, and clinical teams to optimize laboratory performance, implement new testing methodologies, and enhance patient care. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.
Responsibilities
- Policy Development & Compliance. Establish and maintain laboratory procedures, ensuring compliance with AU Medical Center's mission, values, medical staff bylaws, and all relevant policies, regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission).
- Regulatory & Accreditation Oversight. Ensure laboratory operations comply with federal, state, and accrediting bodies, standards, including CAP proficiency testing, CLIA requirements, and Joint Commission guidelines.
- Quality Management & Patient Safety. Oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the Quality Management (QM) program, ensuring laboratory results are accurate, reproducible, and clinically relevant.
- Operational Leadership. Participate in managerial and operational decisions to ensure efficient lab functioning, including process optimization and implementation of best practices.
- Personnel & Staff Development, Maintain a competent and sufficient workforce by overseeing recruitment, training, evaluation, and professional development of laboratory personnel.
- Clinical Consultation & Collaboration, Provide consultation to healthcare providers regarding laboratory test selection, interpretation of results, and their impact on patient management.
- Lab Safety & Environmental Monitoring. Conduct monthly lab walk-throughs to assess lab space, safety standards, workflow efficiency, and address infrastructure or equipment needs.
- New Test Development & Validation. Oversee the selection, evaluation, and validation of new diagnostic tests and ensure their seamless integration into clinical workflows.
- Performance Monitoring & Improvement. Track laboratory productivity, throughput, and efficiency, ensuring that testing meets expected performance metrics and patient care standards.
- Education & Training. Lead continuing professional education for medical staff, residents, and laboratory personnel, ensuring adherence to best practices in clinical pathology.
Required Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or its equivalent. Board certification in Pathology (AP/CP or CP Only)Georgia Medical license or eligibility for licensure to practice medicine in Georgia. Ability to obtain hospital privileges. Strong background in clinical decision support, test utilization management, and laboratory quality improvement. Minimum 5 year of experience in Clinical Pathology, with at least 2 years in a leadership role. Expertise in laboratory management, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance. Experience working with CAP, CLIA and Joint Commission accreditation requirements.
Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
- Evidence of ability as a teacher;
- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with proficiency testing programs and external quality assessments
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) integration and laboratory information systems (LIS)
- Prior involvement in academic teaching and residency/fellowship training programs
- Fellowship training in Clinical Pathology subspecialties (e.g. Clinical Chemistry, Hematopathology, Microbiology, Transfusion Medicine, etc.)
- Strong collaborative skills with multidisciplinary teams
- Experience in laboratory test validation and implementation of new diagnostic assays
- Participation in clinical research, including translational studies and investigational testing
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
