Open Rank, Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty in Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence
Position Description
The Department of Mathematics at Texas State University seeks applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor rank. The position will begin in Fall 2026.
The successful candidate is expected to:
- establish and maintain a strong record of high-quality research in Data Science, Machine Learning, and/or Artificial Intelligence,
- teach mathematics and/or statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels,
- supervise student projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels,
- participate in service to the university community and broader profession, and
- meet the required qualifications for the applied rank.
The selected candidate will be appointed the appropriate rank based on experience and in accordance with college and university policies.The Department of Mathematics is a growing department with a broad range of strengths in Analysis, Topology, Algebra, Combinatorics, Statistics (including Data Science and Machine Learning), Applied Mathematics, Logic, and Mathematics Education. The department started its new Ph.D. program in mathematics in Fall 2025 to complement its Ph.D. program in mathematics education and its master’s programs. The faculty has over $3 million in active grants, including a Sloan Fellow and multiple NSF CAREER awardees. The Department strives to create a welcoming environment that invites students from a wide range of backgrounds to major in mathematics, statistics, and data science. We invite applicants who are enthusiastic about mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate levels to reach their potential. The Department is dedicated to the success of its junior faculty, providing support through formal mentoring, reduced teaching and service loads, collaboration and collegiality, and opportunities to participate in university-wide professional development programs.

Required Qualifications
For Assistant Professor:
- An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field prior to employment.
- Evidence of or potential for research excellence in Data Science, Machine Learning, and/or Artificial Intelligence. Recent publications will be emphasized, but all publications will be considered.
- Evidence of or potential to obtain external funding.
- Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching students.
- A history of or potential for advising student projects.
- An ability to contribute to the mission of the department, www.math.txst.edu/about/mission.html.
For Associate Professor:
- An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field prior to employment.
- Evidence of research excellence in Data Science, Machine Learning and/or Artificial Intelligence. Recent publications will be emphasized, but all publications will be considered.
- Evidence of having obtained research grants.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching students.
- A history of advising student projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- An ability to contribute to the mission of the department, www.math.txst.edu/about/mission.html.
For Professor:
- An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field prior to employment.
- Evidence of a sustained record of research excellence in Data Science, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence. Recent publications will be emphasized, but all publications will be considered
- Evidence of a sustained record of obtaining research grants
- Evidence of excellence in teaching students.
- A history of advising student projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- An ability to contribute to the mission of the department, www.math.txst.edu/about/mission.html.
Preferred Qualifications
For Assistant Professor:
- Evidence of or Potential for interdisciplinary research collaboration.
For Associate Professor/Professor:
- Evidence of interdisciplinary research collaboration.
