The position consists of providing care alongside our ophthalmologists who cover all ophthalmic subspecialties including Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, Strabismus, Pediatrics, and Neuro-ophthalmic conditions. Our department prides itself in collegiality and teamwork. Optometrists are encouraged to practice independently at the highest level as directed by the Maryland Optometric Board.
The University of Maryland School of Medicine established the first department for diseases of the eye in the United States in 1873. Since then, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has played an integral part in the school's curriculum. This dedication to better sight for all has led to many research and surgical innovations, including the creation of the modern-day ophthalmoscope and the first surgery to correct strabismus.
The qualified applicant should have a strong interest in medical based optometry with a focus in ocular disease and/or specialty contact lenses. This position is primarily clinical but also offers opportunities to work with optometry students while seeing patients. There are no didactic responsibilities with this position. Requirements include completion of an approved optometric training program. Board certification or eligibility, and eligibility for licensure in Maryland are also required.
Expected salary range is $130,000 (min) and $215,000 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the departmental faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental variable compensation programs. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein. For more information, please contact the hiring department.
The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
