Position Description & Details

Bismarck State College is seeking a knowledgeable and proactive OSHA Safety & Health Consultant to join our dedicated team. This is your opportunity to make meaningful contributions to businesses and communities by providing expert safety consultation, training, and guidance.
What You'll Do
As an OSHA Safety & Health Consultant, you will work directly with employers across North Dakota, helping them identify hazards, comply with OSHA standards, and implement effective safety and health programs. Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide comprehensive on-site consultation services to North Dakota employers focused on OSHA safety, health, and risk management.
- Evaluate workplace accident logs to determine root causes, identify trends, and recommend corrective measures.
- Recruit and support employers in the creation and execution of robust workplace safety and health programs.
- Conduct hazard assessments at work sites and compile detailed reports with actionable recommendations.
- Conduct worksite evaluations and hazard assessments.
- Prepare field reports with findings and OSHA-compliant recommendations.
- Audit employer safety programs and suggest improvements based on OSHA standards.
- Deliver on-site training to employers and employees in areas of concern identified during evaluations.
- Represent the department at public meetings and seminars to share workplace safety insights.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive reports and documentation for internal records and client distribution.
- Contribute to department innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental and college goals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Continuously - 66-100% - Talk or hear.
- Frequently - 34-66% - Reach with hands and arms, stoop/kneel/crouch, or crawl, stand, walk, or sit, lift to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally - 1-33% - Climb or balance or lift to 50 pounds.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene or occupational safety and health, or related field.
- Working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations (OSHA) about safety and health.
- Working knowledge of OSHA-required industrial safety and health programs.
- Ability to work effectively, professionally, and courteously with others, both internal and external to the division.
- Proficient with computer software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, and electronic calendar) and good keyboarding skills.
- Ability to efficiently organize and prioritize work.
- Must be dependable, flexible, and resourceful as business needs arise.
- Must be a motivated self-starter, with the ability to resolve most problems independently.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Valid North Dakota driver's license and must be able to drive a state vehicle.
- Must be able to travel within North Dakota for work and to other states for training and conferences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a comparable position.
