Purpose:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Maintenance & Operations and the daily work direction of the lead Painter, the Facilities Painter is responsible for performing a full range of skilled journey-level work in painting, finishing and maintaining a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. Position makes decisions based upon sound maintenance practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Journey-level Paint Work - Prepares surfaces for painting and finishing to include repair or replacement of drywall and ceiling tiles; Performs minor associated maintenance such as replacement of baseboards, light covers, emergency exit signs, light and outlet switch plates. Applies undercoats and finish coats using the full range of application methods including brush, roll, and spray; mixes and matches paints and finishes; performs sand and water blasting; erects scaffolding and/or staging for painting projects; paints signs and parking lot/roadway markings; advises in the selection and storage of painting materials; inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspects related work performed by contractors; estimates cost, time and materials for painting projects; participates in the maintenance and operations of a paint shop; cleans and maintains painting and finishing materials, tools, and equipment used in the performance of duties; performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintains a safe and clean work environment. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as paint thinners, lead and asbestos. Performs preventative maintenance per shop schedule. Responds to graffiti calls within 24 hours and, if immediate repair is not possible, apply temporary fix.
  • Safety and Training - Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures; including lead abatement, if certified. Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Shop, Tool and Equipment Maintenance - Operates power tools and shop equipment including tint machine, shaker, grinder, power air sander shop vacuum, portable generator and manlift.
  • General Guidelines - Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools. Provides feedback to the Supervising Painter, when requested, on strategies to efficiently utilize resources to create a timely and efficient workflow. Adheres to guidelines that support the functions of the unit. Contributes, participates and functions within a team environment. Acts with consideration towards others when working in their areas while operating equipment, tools and vehicles, etc. Communicates and conducts oneself in a professional manner at all times to properly represent yourself, your team (Shop/FS&O Division/ University). Contributes, participates, and functions in a team environment. Communicates and conducts self in professional manner at all times.

Other Functions:

Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging; and a thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.

Ability to: be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately; mix paints and finishes and match colors; erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders; select the most appropriate materials; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of painting work; maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants in an effective and professional manner; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to operate.

Minimum Qualifications:

The abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter's apprenticeship program.

Specialized Skills:

2 years of journey-level experience as a painter. Ability to handle high-stress scenarios and connect with customers, manage conflict, demonstrate empathy, and manage your stress levels. Ability to prioritize assigned tasks; follow procedural oral and written directions; communicate effectively, both written and orally; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multi-cultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent <student/finance> information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

This position has been designated as a sensitive position with: responsibility or access/possession of building master or sub-master keys for building access; access to controlled or hazardous substances; responsibility for operating commercial vehicles, machinery or equipment that could pose environmental hazards or cause injury, illness, or death. Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage. May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

Physical Environment:

Position requires full range of motion, and a variety of movements necessary to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to lifting and moving moderate-sized equipment up to 50 pounds (moving up to 100 pounds is required rarely). Position requires bending, climbing, reaching, moving heavy objects and equipment, and applying force. Requires use of a video display terminal. Standard vision requirements with/without corrective aides: Close (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral; Depth Perception; ability to adjust focus. Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. Requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
