Job Summary:

Our program is growing. The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care seeks a full-time physician to deliver expert in-person outpatient palliative care at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. This provider would be board-certified or board-eligible for Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The physician will support a broad adult patient population, including those with solid and hematologic malignancies receiving chemo/immunotherapy as well as patients undergoing advanced therapies such as CAR-T and SCT. In fewer numbers, this provider would also consult on patients with other life-limiting conditions caused by end-organ failure.

In 2025 we moved our existing outpatient palliative care team (comprised of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, and chaplains) to a new, large, multispecialty clinic facility. This physician will lead the rebuilding of our original palliative care ambulatory clinic at the University Hospital location of Carbone Cancer Center. As such, the successful candidate will not only be a skilled palliative care physician, but they will also help rebuild and strengthen the palliative care presence at this critical site.

Key Job Responsibilities:

• Provide patient care in the ambulatory setting
• Comprehensively manage symptoms and facilitate goals of care discussions and advance care planning for patients with serious illnesses
• Lead the rebuilding of our original palliative care ambulatory clinic at the University Hospital location of Carbone Cancer Center
• Manage patient panel while building relationships to expand referrals from internal colleagues and community providers
• Provide on call ambulatory after hours coverage (future state)
• Collaborate with interprofessional teammates
• Collaborate with oncologists/hematologists and other specialists to optimize patient care coordination
• Teach medical students, residents, and fellows within the context of your clinical practice
• Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Department:

The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care at UW-Madison includes more than 60 faculty, 31 Advanced Practice Providers, and 19 Fellows. The division's faculty lead cutting-edge basic and translational research programs in classical and malignant hematology, cellular therapy, cancer biology, cancer prevention and screening and medical oncology. The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology & Palliative Care is part of the Department of Medicine and the NCI- designated UW Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Division is active in all phases of cancer research, from prevention, screening, cancer therapy, development and evaluation, survivorship and palliative care. Clinical research is conducted in the UWCCC by 18 multi-disciplinary Disease Oriented Teams and is supported by the UWCCC Clinical Research Central Office on the main campus. Over 170 UWCCC investigators regularly enroll patients to therapeutic intervention trials at our UWCCC clinical sites.

We are members of the NCCN, ECOG- ACRIN, Alliance, BigTen Cancer Research Consortium, Wisconsin Oncology Network (WON) and Wisconsin Association of Hematology and Oncology (WAHO).

The candidate will have also access to many shared resources and opportunities to collaborate with basic, translational and clinical researchers at the NCI-designated UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC), the VA Hospital and throughout the UW-Madison campus. Administrative duties including committees and community service may be added as appropriate to the interests of the successful candidate.

Compensation:

Negotiable, 12 months.

Required Qualifications:

• Board certification or board eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Care medicine
• BLS certification
• Candidate is required to have a Wisconsin medical license by the appointment start date.
• Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges by the appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in an academic medical setting preferred
• For an appointment as Associate Professor rank on CHS Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate Professor on the CHS or CT Track.
• Experience in outpatient palliative medicine
• Demonstrated interest in program development
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and evidence of excellence in teaching.
• Interest in research

Education:

MD, DO, or equivalent from an accredited medical school is required.
