Part-Time Faculty: AAS 408 Masters of Black Music (Spring 2026)
Job Description
The Department of African American Studies (https://thecollege.syr.edu/african-american-studies/) in Syracuse University's College of Arts & Sciences seeks a part-time instructor for the 2026 spring semester to teach an upper-level course, AAS 408: Masters of Black Music, which enables students to undertake in-depth explorations of leading Black music artists. One section (M001) scheduled for Tu/Th-3:30-4:50 pm.
Featured individuals and/or groups can represent genres ranging from Hip Hop/Rap to Jazz, Blues, Soul, Reggae, and/or music practices of artists from other parts of the diaspora or Africa. The course connects the aesthetics of Black sound to other forms of cultural production and addresses their social and political significance.
The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department. All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment.
Qualifications
- Masters degree required; Doctorate (or ABD) preferred.
- Doctoral training in Black Studies and/or the Humanities.
Responsibilities
- Teach one section of AAS 408: Masters of Black Music.
- Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
- Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
- Prepare lectures, projects or other student assignments.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
- Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
- Meet all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should make your best effort to reschedule the class or obtain a substitute.
- Work with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
- Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to the University regulations.
- Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
- Provide department sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
- Complete all other course-related duties as outlined by your departments policies for part-time instructors.
