Pay Range: $55 - $65 per lesson hour

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description:
The Setnor School of Music within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach Viola lessons for music majors, non-majors and performance honors students during the 2026-2027 academic year.

Qualifications:
- MM or equivalent university teaching experience.
- Candidates with prior university teaching experience will be highly prioritized.
Job Specific Qualifications:
- MM in viola or equivalent university teaching experience.
- Candidates should have extensive performance, teaching, and field experience.
- Candidates with prior university teaching experience will be highly prioritized.
Responsibilities:
Teaching private viola lessons to music majors, viola lessons for non-majors/secondary lessons, potential chamber music coachings, two viola studio classes per semester, participation in auditions and end of semester string juries. Candidate will be expected to help recruit a viola studio and participate in string area meetings and planning sessions.
In addition:
- Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
- Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
- Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
- Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
- Meeting all designated class periods.
- If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.
- You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
- Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
- Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
- Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to demonstrate high level of performance on the viola.
