Part-Time Instructor, Fire/Rescue (High School)

Job Description

The Part-Time Instructor, Fire/Rescue (High School) is under the direction of the Fire/Rescue/EMS Program Director and responsible for preparing and delivering of certification and non-certification fire courses in accordance with guidelines from the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties Summary

  • Perform a variety of administrative duties in support of the Fire/Rescue education program
  • Maintain required program documentation including general correspondence, reports, class schedules, forms, contracts, and memorandums
  • Update and maintain files as requested by the Fire/Rescue/EMS Program Director
  • Accept teaching assignments, based on the needs of the college, at one or more of the following: High School campus, L.L. Polk campus (Polkton), Old Charlotte Highway campus (Monroe), in community locations (Anson and/or Union counties), during morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend hours.
  • Assist with the coordination of courses in Anson and Union County
  • Coordinate the selection of textbooks, library resources, equipment, and supplies to enhance learning and to maintain program currency
  • Participate in student recruitment, retention, advising, and registration activities
  • Continue professional development for the improvement of self and the program to meet the needs of a learning-centered college
  • Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for the position
  • Assist the Fire/Rescue/EMS Program Director in maintaining a roster of qualified adjunct instructors for the program
  • Develop strong partnerships with appropriate community stakeholders in support of program and college improvement
  • Demonstrate high-level professionalism in developing and/or implementing long- and short- range plans in accordance with the philosophy of a learning-centered college
  • Participate in institutional, advisory, and program/instruction committees, campus activities, and representation of the college in the community
  • Provide accessibility to students and colleagues as expected in a learning-centered college
  • Participate in or support the mentoring process, the SPCC Foundation, and grant identification, preparation, implementation, and evaluation
  • Exhibit an uncompromising commitment to SPCC as a learning-centered college through the College's mission, vision, values, core skills and learning outcomes, and delivery of instruction and services
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fire/Rescue/EMS Program Director, the Department Chair for Public Safety, the Dean of the School of Health and Public Services, and/or the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Fire Service
  • North Carolina OFSM Qualified Fire Instructor I, qualified to teach the Firefighter I&II class

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related field from an accredited institution
  • North Carolina OFSM Qualified Fire Instructor II
  • Experience teaching classes in the NC Community College System
  • Qualification to teach HazMat Operations
