Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an effective learning environment, responding to student needs, managing instructional activities, developing fire service-related courses, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field.
The Fire Occupational Extension (OE) Instructor is responsible for delivering quality instruction and supporting the coordination and implementation of fire and emergency services training programs. This includes course instruction, assisting with day-to-day operations, supporting course scheduling, and ensuring training is delivered in accordance with established state standards and program expectations.
The Fire OE Instructor works in coordination with the Fire Academy Coordinator to align schedules, instructor assignments, facility use, and equipment needs to ensure efficient training delivery and to prevent conflicts related to shared resources.
This role requires maintaining an active instructional presence in both classroom and hands-on training environments, ensuring that instruction reflects current fire service practices and standards. The Instructor is expected to maintain professionalism, support student development, and contribute to a structured and disciplined training environment.
The Fire OE Instructor supports program functions by providing customer service, assisting with data tracking, and maintaining accurate course and student documentation. The position also supports compliance with applicable college requirements and state fire service training standards. The Fire OE Instructor contributes to the overall success of the program through active participation in training operations and collaboration with faculty, staff, and partner agencies.
This position reports directly to the Fire Occupational Extension Program Director.

Education Required
- North Carolina NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II certification
- North Carolina NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II Qualified Instructor status
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
- Demonstrated fire service experience with the ability to deliver both classroom and hands-on instruction
- Associate degree in Fire Science or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution, or the ability to obtain within two (2) years of employment
Education Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Services Administration, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution
- North Carolina NFPA 1403 Live Fire Qualified Instructor
- North Carolina NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue – Rope Rescue Qualified Instructor
- North Carolina NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue – Passenger and Heavy Vehicle Rescue Qualified Instructor
Experience Required
- Five years of relevant or closely related field experience in Fire Service Management
- Three years of Firefighter training/teaching experience based on regulatory requirements
- Satisfactory completion of teaching credentials for courses assigned is required.
Experience Preferred
- Greater than seven years of relevant field experience in Fire Service Management or a closely related career field
- Greater than five years of Firefighter training/teaching experience based on regulatory requirements
- Community College teaching or training experience preferred
- Experience with the assessment of student learning outcomes
