Part-Time Lecturer, American History and Public Memory

NYU’s Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach a 2-credit undergraduate course, "Memorializing American History: Public Memory and the DC National Mall" for Summer 2026. The course will be under the sponsorship of the Department of History in the College of Arts and Science.

The summer term runs for 6 weeks from May 20, 2026 to June 30, 2026. Options for the class meeting pattern for this 2-credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction.

The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Washington, DC as a learning tool (e.g., a guest speaker, an excursion) is an expectation for the course. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content, and rigorous student assessment is required. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at our site.

Course Description:

This course surveys the interdisciplinary studies of Public Memory, encompassing theoretical concepts specific to history, the politics of culture, public policy, and cultural heritage. During the course, the first two weeks survey scholarly writing on Public Memory. The second two weeks are dedicated to in-person site visits to DC memorials on the National Mall. The third two weeks are comprised of group presentations shared by classmates on an oral project related to public memory and the DC National Mall.
