FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Schedule: Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows: Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB) - $89.20 up to $130.94 per hour. Lecture Course (Salary Schedule AJ) - $103.85 up to $151.07.

Months Per Year: Semester assignments as needed

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Nursing instructors provide clinical instruction in acute, long-term, and community care settings.
  2. Implement skill-building in the nursing lab setting.
  3. Report to the lead instructor as needed.
  4. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours.
  5. Participate in nursing team, department, and division meetings.
  6. Assist in curriculum development and revision.
  7. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs.

Employment Standards (acquired through education, training, and/or experience)

  1. Recent clinical experience in acute care medical-surgical nursing.
  2. Willingness to update skills if needed.

Knowledge of:

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of successful clinical teaching techniques.
  2. Understanding of current nursing issues and trends, with a willingness to actively participate and contribute to changes in the nursing program at department and team meetings.
  3. A commitment to staying abreast of new trends in nursing and the clinical setting.
  4. A commitment to supporting gender and ethnically diverse students enrolled in nursing.
  5. Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of computer-based technology appropriate to the field of nursing.
  6. A commitment to the SMCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum.
  7. A commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to teach in clinical areas as assigned.
  2. Willingness to accept evening or weekend assignments as needed.
  3. The ability to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress in the clinical setting.
  4. The ability to use teaching methods that actively engage students in their own learning and encourage the development of problem-solving skills.
  5. The ability to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students.
  6. The ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills in the clinical setting.
  7. A willingness to work with both faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college, and district levels.
  8. The ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy and modify techniques to better engage students.

Job Requirements:

  • Possession of a Master's or above in nursing OR Bachelor's in nursing AND Master's or above in health education or health science OR the equivalent (see below) OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher
  • A current California Registered Nursing license
  • At least one year's continuous experience, within the previous five years as a registered nurse providing direct patient care. (Clinical teaching applies toward direct patient care.)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
