We seek a talented post-doctoral scientist to carry out research to better understand large-scale circulation signals in climate predictions and projections. This research is a component of the AUSPICE project (“Advancing Understanding of the Signal-to-noise Paradox and its Impacts on Climate Ensembles”). The post will be based in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading.

You will improve our understanding of the origin of large-scale atmospheric circulation signals on seasonal-to-decadal timescales and the implications for climate predictions and projections. Together with the team of scientists on the project, you will perform targeted experiments using state-of-the-art climate prediction systems and novel analysis techniques to better understand the sources and mechanisms underpinning persistent signal-to-noise errors.

Please note that candidates are required to be based at the University of Reading for the duration of the contract. Reasonable adjustments can be made where necessary.

You will have:

  • Have, or shortly expect to receive, a PhD or equivalent research experience in physical or mathematical sciences
  • Strong scientific analytic ability and high capacity for problem solving
  • Experience of analysing output from climate models or similar datasets
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Candidates  are required to submit a supporting statement (500 words) outlining their interest and fit for the role and a CV.
