Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 14 months in the first instance.
The purpose of the role is the development of III-V single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for satellite applications and quantum key distribution (QKD). The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Prof. Louise Hirst within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy.
The role will focus on the development of device designs and fabrication approaches to enable enhanced performance for QKD and survivability in hostile space environments. This will include simulation of electrical and optical properties of novel device architectures, simulation of environmental stressors for anticipated satellite mission profiles including particle radiation exposure.
The role will also include the development of device processing techniques for performance and resilience in these environments, as well as stress testing of QKD components, including particle radiation exposure and subsequent characterisation of materials and device degradation.
The successful applicant will also prepare manuscripts for publication and present results at national and international conferences. They will support maintenance, adaptation and safe operation of fabrication and characterisation equipment required for programme delivery, including procurement of equipment and materials, development of appropriate risk assessments and liaison with facility research technical professionals. They will support with supervision and training of students working on programme deliverables and work closely with industry partners. They will also support with programme management including preparation of progress reports and participating in review meetings with the funder and project partners.
