Job Summary

Within the Futureproof Tunnels research program, this PhD position focuses on modelling the soil-structure interaction of immersed tunnels. The project aims to develop a 3D modelling strategy to predict the long-term behaviour, reliability, and remaining lifespan of existing immersed tunnels, addressing challenges from aging infrastructure and renovations in soft soil conditions.

Responsibilities

• Develop a 3D tunnel-soil-interaction modelling strategy to analyze interactions between the tunnel, its components (including joints), and the surrounding soil.
• Combine different numerical modelling approaches.
• Interact closely with other researchers on monitoring and modelling of immersed tunnel deformation.
• Cooperate with research team members and industry expert committees.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Essential experience with developing numerical models and using 3D finite element codes.
• Background in soil mechanics and structural mechanics is highly appreciated.
• High proficiency in written and spoken Dutch and English.
• Strong communication skills.
