Offer Description
The International Centre for Translational Eye Research (ICTER) is a multi-investigator center for eye research as related to imaging and biochemical techniques to support advances in understanding the etiology and treatment of human blinding diseases. The new research agenda (carried under International Research Agenda’ project no. FENG.02.01-IP.05-T005/23) aims to develop new tools for safer and more effective surgical interventions, new therapies for eye diseases, and diagnostic methods to improve prognosis and restore vision. The main technology to be developed under this program will be a novel robotic system for delivering drugs to the eye and performing a tissue biopsy, in which a robotic system will assist the micromanipulation of the injection device with 3-D localized imaging.
ICTER is looking for candidates with a Master’s degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, or a related field, with practical experience in molecular cloning, DNA construct preparation, cell culture, and genetic engineering. Experience with viral vectors or recombinant protein expression will be an advantage
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team working to develop a new gene-delivery strategy targeting retinal bipolar cells. The project involves the design and testing of genetic constructs, the assessment of their selectivity, and the development of modified viral particles for targeted delivery to retinal neurons.
The PhD scholar will primarily contribute to cloning and genetic construct development, molecular validation, cell-based experiments, and production and characterization of genetically engineered viral vectors used in studies of retinal gene delivery and vision restoration
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and cloning DNA constructs for targeted gene delivery;
- Molecular validation of recombinant constructs, including PCR, sequencing, and expression analysis;
- Cell culture and in vitro testing of construct expression and selectivity;
- Production and characterization of genetically engineered viral vectors and pseudotyped viral particles;
- Optimization of cloning and genetic engineering workflows;
- Analysis and documentation of experimental results, including preparation of publications and reports;
- Presenting research findings at scientific conferences.
Salary/Stipend amount/month: 3850 gross/month (0,5 FTE) (remuneration will be calculated proportionally in case of lower FTE value)
Position starts on: 01 September 2026
