Job Summary

The Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Education invites applications for a Teaching Faculty position in the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses and will have specific experience in Elementary Physical Education methods, technology for Physical Education, Foundations of Physical Education, Adapted Physical Education teaching, supervision in student teaching, cooperative learning/social and emotional learning framework, Health Education teaching, and advising Physical Education student majors are also key areas of focus for this position.

Start Date: August 17th, 2026

The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in K–12 Physical Education pedagogy, assessment, curriculum design, and community building. Depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise, additional teaching opportunities may be available within the broader Department of Kinesiology.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
  • May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Serve as mentor to students by supporting their academic and professional growth by actively engaging in professional development (conference attendance and presentations) in disciple specific organizations for PETE/HE/APE, contributing to the PETE/HE/APE program. This position also supervises student teaching/observation/practicum experiences of students, thus having experience teaching at K-12 PE is required. The prospective candidate is expected to participate in PETE/HE/APE program and SOE/college community events and activities throughout the academic year.
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

Department

The Department of Kinesiology is a multidisciplinary department that includes undergraduate programs in Kinesiology, Physical Education, and Health Promotion and Health Equity as well as nationally ranked graduate programs in Exercise and Movement Science, Athletic Training, and Occupational Therapy. Graduates of our programs have gone on to careers as some of the most prominent researchers and scholars in the field, and leaders within their respective professions.

Compensation

Minimum: $66,000 This is a 9-month academic year appointment, renewable annually.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, competitively priced health/dental/vision/life insurance, tax-advantaged savings accounts, and participation in the nationally recognized Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years teaching in pre-K-12 Schools
  • Demonstrated strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage effectively in collaborative, collegial, and interdisciplinary interactions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Physical Education pedagogy and instructional design, including curriculum development, assessment, and evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Experience in Elementary Physical Education methods, including lesson planning, classroom management, and instructional differentiation.
  • Knowledge of technology integration in Physical Education to enhance teaching and student engagement.
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and evaluate student teachers during field placements and practicum experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in additional PE content areas, including Adapted Physical Education and Health Education.

Education

Required: Master’s Degree in Physical Education or related field

Preferred: Ph.D./Ed.D. (in progress) in Physical Education, Adapted Physical Education or closely related field Experience in teaching pedagogy courses in Physical Education Methods, Health Education Methods, and First Aid/CPR Certification
