The position performs highly skilled level plumbing work involving the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of complex commercial and institutional plumbing systems. This position requires expert knowledge of plumbing codes, mechanical room systems, specialty valves, and related equipment, with the ability to diagnose issues ranging from routine service calls to large-scale system failures. The role operates independently, provides technical guidance to others as needed, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform journeyman-level installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of commercial and institutional plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, gas piping, fixtures, and mechanical room equipment (steam and chilled water). Diagnose and resolve complex plumbing issues affecting buildings and infrastructure.
- Independently troubleshoot system failures, leaks, pressure issues, and equipment malfunctions. Respond to emergency service calls, assess risk, implement corrective actions, and restore systems to operational condition with minimal disruption.
- Ensure all work complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes, safety standards, and university policies. Complete work orders, inspections, documentation, and material take-offs accurately and in a timely manner. Review drawings, specifications, and schematics to execute work correctly.
- Provide technical guidance and informal leadership to apprentices and lower-level plumbers. Serve as a role model for safety, workmanship, professionalism, and customer service. Assist in planning work activities and sequencing tasks for efficient execution.
- Communicate professionally with building occupants, supervisors, contractors, and other trades to coordinate work activities. Maintain a clean appearance and positive public relations while representing Facilities Services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of commercial and institutional plumbing systems, materials, and mechanical room equipment.
- Extensive experience performing commercial and/or institutional plumbing service, including troubleshooting and repair of complex plumbing issues.
- Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and safety standards, with the ability to interpret and apply blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic devices.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple assignments, and communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and customers while maintaining a safe work environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to squat, kneel or be in awkward body positioning for extending periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, completion of a recognized apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Journeyman Plumber license or certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
