Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Physical Plant is one unit of the Facilities Organization which also includes Architecture and Construction Services, Project Management, Utilities and Engineering, Facilities Administration. The primary purpose of the Physical Plant is to maintain the building, grounds, and infrastructure of the UNCW campus so that it is safe, reliable, clean, and attractive.
The Plumbing Shop provides the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems including pumps, motors, seals, cooling towers, boilers, plumbing devices, plumbing fixtures, piping, insulation, water and natural gas based utility services, and plumbing related to mechanical systems.
Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Plumber position is a maintenance position that performs work normally associated with Plumbing. Responsibilities include:
- Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on all mechanical plumbing systems and associated structures.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, and installs pipe systems up to 10 inches in diameter, pipe insulation, tubing, pumps, gas distribution lines, gas regulators, valves and plumbing devices and fixtures.
- Repairs and insulates steam lines, traps, coils and components.
- Installs and repairs laboratory equipment, including ice machines, autoclaves and dishwashers.
- Performs installation, repair, and maintenance on all campus water distribution, waste disposal systems, sewer lift stations, back-flow preventers, fire hydrants, interior and exterior plumbing fixtures, pumps, water heaters, irrigation lines, roof drains, storm drains, cooling towers, swimming pool piping and filtration system, and campus water tower.
- Repairs and installs acid waste lines (glass and plastic thermobond) and maintains deionization and sterilization systems throughout campus.
- Performs refurbishment of water fountains.
- Performs minor concrete repairs to culverts, drains, fountains and drop inlets.
- Reviews design drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with code and campus standards.
- Monitors and inspects contracted services on campus related to plumbing and utility work.
This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- NC Plumbing license.
- Five (5) years of progressive experience in plumbing maintenance trade environment.
- Technical or trade school training.
- Working knowledge of the North Carolina Plumbing and Building Codes.
- General working knowledge of gas, water, sanitary sewage and other utility maintenance.
- Knowledge and skills in the assembly of all types of pipes; cutting, threading, silver soldering, priming, gluing, layout and installation.
- Ability to install pipe insulation, rebuild pumps and replace motors.
Required Certifications or Licensures
Valid NC Drivers License, or be able to obtain one within thirty days of hiring.
FTE: 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)
Months Per Year: 12 Months
Work Days: Monday - Friday
Work Hours: 7:00am - 4:00pm, with rotating on-call duty
