Are you a skilled plumber looking for a dynamic role? As a journey-level Plumber, you'll perform a wide range of tasks, from installation and maintenance to troubleshooting and repair of various plumbing systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Comprehensive Plumbing Work: Install, maintain, inspect, modify, and repair plumbing systems for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire prevention.
- System Maintenance: Troubleshoot and test plumbing systems, including backflow prevention devices, and maintain campus swimming pools and lab utilities.
- Hands-On Tasks: Assemble, install, and repair pumps, pipes, fittings, and fixtures; cut, thread, and solder pipes; and manage valves and pipe fittings.
- Project Oversight: Estimate costs, time, and materials for plumbing projects, inspect completed work, and ensure compliance with building and safety codes.
- Team Leadership: Provide instruction and direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants and collaborate with other trades workers.
- Safety & Compliance: Follow established safety procedures, maintain a clean work environment, and handle hazardous materials safely.

Position Information
- This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date six months after start date.
- This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
SDSU Facilities services is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university.

Education and Experience
Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade; a base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.
Abilities: Must be able to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems; perform applicable welding work; obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses; make rough sketches of plumbing installations; read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; prepare standard reports; read and write at the level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.
Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber's apprenticeship program.
Key Qualifications
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification is preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods and materials used in the plumbing trade and thorough knowledge of the proper use and care of the tools and equipment used in that work.
- Experience with the most current equipment and methods recommended for proper and expeditious work practices.
- Thorough knowledge of current applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations (including California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes).
- Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems.
- Ability to make rough sketches of plumbing installations.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Compensation:
CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,998 - $8,737 per month (Step 1 - Step 20); Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience. Step placement upon appointment is not expected to exceed Step 11 ($7,311/month) for highly qualified candidates. Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations.
