Police Communication Operator I Salary Range: $40,326 annualized.

Police Communication Operator II Salary Range: Commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

Police Communications Operator I

The Police Communications Operator I is responsible for directing police and emergency responders to locations within the UTSA Department of Public Safety jurisdiction, as specified by the UT System Police, to provide an appropriate police response and action. This role performs entry-level police communications work as a licensed first responder. The PCO's responsibilities involve serving as the primary point of contact for agency officers and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies seeking assistance and information.

Police Communications Operator II

The Police Communications Operator II assists in providing rapid law enforcement response to campus emergencies by directing responding officers to the scene via police communications. This role supports campus safety and law enforcement efforts, including physical security, data gathering, incoming calls, and other support efforts. The PCO's responsibilities involve serving as the primary point of contact for agency officers and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies seeking assistance and information.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Provides emergency assistance in incidents posing threats to the safety and well-being of law enforcement officers or the campus community while exercising sound judgment and resourcefulness.
  2. Operates emergency phones, radios, telecommunications, and computer equipment, surveillance camera systems, alarms, and security systems.
  3. Provides a communication interface between officers and other law enforcement agency officials and serves as the communications link during disasters, civil disturbances, and other serious incidents using radio, telephone, electronic, and other communications systems.
  4. Operates VHF/UHF police radio console; maintains computerized records of incoming calls for assistance; dispatches officers to situations requiring police response; contacts and coordinates response by EMS and Fire department; maintains computerized records of all police/patrol activities; monitors CCTV systems. Operates various computer terminals, including the Computer Aided Dispatch system, TLETS, access control, surveillance cameras, GCC Fire Alarm monitoring, Enhanced 9-1-1 console, and AudioLog digital recorder.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Police Communications Operator I

  • TCOLE Telecommunicator License must be obtained within 1 year from the date of hire.
  • One (1) year of demonstrated ability to uphold responsibilities, reliably meet commitments and expectations, and exhibit dependability and accountability through employment, volunteer work, or community involvement.

Police Communications Operator II

  • TCOLE Intermediate Telecommunicator License.
  • Three (3) years of demonstrated ability to uphold responsibilities, reliably meet commitments and expectations, and exhibit dependability and accountability through employment, volunteer work, or community involvement.

Working Conditions

  • Position requires the ability to function during stressful situations commonly associated with police operations.

Physical Demands

  • Must possess the physical ability to hear ordinary telephone conversation and visually see written paper documents and electronic visual display (computer monitor). Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.

This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
