Job Summary: This position involves the safeguarding of human lives and property.
Expectation of Quality: Employee will support the mission of Sul Ross State University by providing high-quality, professional services, timely responses, and solutions to customer requests.
Key Competencies: (Knowledge Skills and Abilities) Good interpersonal skills and report writing ability. Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead law enforcement personnel, make sound decisions during emergency and high-stress situations, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with university personnel, students, community members, and outside agencies. Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of Texas criminal law, criminal procedure, traffic law, and applicable federal laws. Knowledge of law enforcement supervision, administration, training, and personnel management. Knowledge of emergency management principles and the Incident Command System. Ability to lead and supervise law enforcement personnel effectively. Ability to analyze complex situations and make sound decisions under pressure. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally verbally and in writing. Ability to prepare and review professional law enforcement reports, administrative documents, policies, memoranda, and correspondence. Ability to establish effective working relationships with University administrators, faculty, staff, students, community members, prosecutors, and outside law enforcement agencies. Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive law enforcement and personnel information. Ability to organize multiple assignments and establish operational priorities. Ability to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, fairness, and accountability.
Essential Job Functions:
- Patrol all University owned property; prevent criminal acts and civil disturbances; to arrest and/or refer to appropriate University officials those engaged in such activities; patrol assigned areas of the campus both on foot and in an automobile
- Advise, direct and give information to the general public.
- Respond to and handle emergency calls involving a wide variety of situations.
- Enforce State and Federal laws where applicable as well as published University Regulations.
- Make arrests with and without warrants; conduct searches and seizures after establishing probable cause or obtaining proper warrants from a magistrate.
- Investigate complaints from students, faculty, and staff and make preliminary investigations of crimes; conduct preliminary initial interrogation and interviews of victims, witnesses and suspects; make necessary reports and records in writing; initiate preliminary investigation of all criminal acts within the jurisdiction of the University.
- Report all matters observed regarding safety and welfare of those on State property; safeguard property; collect, preserve, and maintain chains of custody of evidence.
- Testify in courts.
- Regulate and control traffic; investigate all traffic accidents, to include preparation of reports; enforce violations of moving and parking regulations and provide University services on a call basis.
- Cooperate with other police units and agencies.
- Operate and maintain departmental and personal equipment.
Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university.
Working Conditions: This position may expect irregular working hours and days off; may be required to work during night hours, weekends, and rotating shifts; exposure to inclement and extreme weather conditions. Involves a degree of hazards and various other physical difficulties including stairs; steep inclines and livestock; position is Security Sensitive.
Physical Requirements: Involves the regular patrolling of the campus and requires mature judgment under conditions of stress. Must be emotionally stable; honest; capable of functioning intelligently in a variety of situations; be able to communicate and act effectively; endure physical and verbal abuse and exhibit a balanced perspective.
Security Sensitive: This position is classified as Security-Sensitive and is thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094, which authorize employers to obtain and review criminal history record information for applicants.

The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University or a recognized student organization; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

Who Is Sul Ross? Where is Sul Ross?
The university's name honors Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross, the son of a pioneer Waco, Texas, family and a popular soldier, governor, educator and humanitarian. Founded in 1917 as a teacher college, Sul Ross continues to offer teacher education as one of its most popular programs. Others in high demand are business, criminal justice and agricultural and natural resource sciences. Sul Ross achieved university status in 1969.

A Small Size, But Plenty to Do
With an enrollment of about 2,000 students on the main campus in Alpine, class sizes are small, guaranteeing a much higher level of personal attention from instructors and the university's support staff. But there's plenty for students to do in their free time: lots of student clubs and organizations, a thriving arts community and a strong athletic tradition.
The SRSU men's basketball team won the conference championship five times in the past 20 years, including the 1999 American Southwest Conference championship. The women's basketball team has also won five conference championships and played in eight national playoffs, even making it to the Final Four.
Similarly, the Lobos football and baseball teams have won five conference titles each in the past 20 years, including American Southwest Conference championships in the late 1990s. The Lady Lobos volleyball team has won nine conference championships in all.
Rodeo is significant part of the Sul Ross program, and the university is the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Many team members have gone on to become world champions, and 1951 graduate Harley May is a charter member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Hall of Fame.
