Job Summary
Provide individual lessons on your primary instrument. Participate in faculty performances. Recruit and promote the college, music program, and Performing Arts department. Prepare music-major students for eventual transfer to four-year University. Communicate with students in a timely manner including setting a teaching schedule, documenting lessons, and assessing student progress each term. Prepare students for individual lesson juries at the end of each term.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in music, performance, pedagogy, accompanying, music education (M.M., M.Mus, M.Mus.Ed, or MA) is required. Extensive experience and recommendations may be considered in lieu of the master’s degree. Knowledge of age appropriate instrumental technique and pedagogy is required. Must have experience as a performer. Must have working proficiency on the piano.
Provisional: Bachelor’s degree plus 27 graduate quarter hours in the above field(s) AND in active pursuit of master’s degree or doctorate. Applicants hired under this qualification will be approved to teach in a provisional capacity until proof of completion of the minimum qualifications is provided to the college.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Requires arm, hand and finger dexterity to operate an instrument. Requires sufficient hearing and well-developed speaking ability to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words, music and numbers. Requires sufficient aural and visual proficiency to identify, assess, diagnose, and correct playing problems in lessons and performance.
Work is performed in a classroom, teaching studio, or office setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. Considerable time is spent working at a piano.
Essential Duties
- Instruct students individually in lessons using music from across the solo repertoire and appropriate for the student’s current level and needs.
- Meet periodically with the program chair to discuss music program needs.
- Participate as assigned in occasional department and advisory meetings.
- Complete all administrative tasks associated with teaching a course: assign and grade student work, establish reasonable communication with students, report student attainment of course outcomes, maintain student records, comply with college policies and processes related to teaching workload.
- Assess student abilities based on assessment of initial ability level and progress to their overall goal.
- Maintain awareness of audition requirements for music majors in music education and performance proficiency based examination upon graduation and/or transfer.
- Recruit and promote the LBCC music program on campus and in the community.
- Establish and maintain opportunities for reasonable and consistent out-of-class contact with students.
- Connect students to college support services and resources to promote student success and retention. Maintain reasonable communication with college support services to this end.
- Work effectively with students and staff of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and ages. Promote both a classroom environment and a curriculum of equity and inclusivity.
