Post-Doc for The ERC Project Romana – The Roman Turn among Jews, Greek Pagans, and Christians
We are seeking a brilliant and committed post-doctoral fellow to join the Romana research team led by Prof. Maren Niehoff. The fellow will work closely with an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars focused on comparative studies of philosophy, law, and literature within the Roman Empire. Duties include contributing to the project’s collaborative publications, participating in seminars and workshops, and producing original research related to the project’s themes. The position is part-time and ideal for scholars wishing to be part of an intellectually stimulating and collegial environment.
About Our Research: The Romana project, supported by the prestigious ERC grant, investigates the profound transformation known as the “Roman Turn” in Jewish, Greek, and Christian thought during the Roman Empire. This interdisciplinary research explores how major cultural groups responded to and appropriated Roman intellectual, legal, and literary traditions. Through close textual analysis of sources in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew/Aramaic, the project reexamines the philosophical, legal, and narrative strategies employed by each community. The position is part of a broader initiative that bridges classical studies with Jewish and Christian traditions in a shared imperial context.
Your Profile: To excel in this role, we seek candidates with expertise in:
- Roman law in comparative perspective
- Rabbinic literature in the Land of Israel in comparative perspective
- Latin and Greek philosophy in the Roman Empire
- Greek literature in the Roman Empire
- New Testament or Early Christianity in the Roman Empire
Additional qualifications:
- Ability to work collaboratively with a research team
- Commitment to producing high-quality, project-related publications
- Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary academic exchange
Funding: An annual fellowship of 35,200 USD.
Application: Please submit the following documentation as three separate PDF files: Letter of motivation, CV (including a list of publications), and Copy of your original academic degree(s). Application Deadline: 2025-09-16.
About Your Supervisor: Prof. Maren Niehoff is one of the leading scholars of ancient Judaism and Greco-Roman intellectual history. She holds the Chair in Jewish Philosophy and Thought at the Hebrew University and is the Principal Investigator of the Romana ERC project. Visit Prof. Niehoff's Page: https://marenniehoff.huji.ac.il/
