Post Doctoral Associate (Hocky Group)
The Hocky research group is seeking a motivated individual who wishes to perform postdoctoral research in theoretical and computational chemistry and biophysics. The primary research topics involve studying the effect of force in biophysical contexts using molecular simulations and theory. The type of project ranges from computational methods development to projects directly interfacing with experimental collaborators. You can see more about our current and past work at: http://hockygroup.com/
The postdoc would be expected to participate in multiple projects as well as to help supervise graduate students who are early in their research careers. They would also be expected to help seek external funding for their own work, as well as to participate in writing of proposals for federal grants and computational resources. Postdocs in the Hocky group will receive close one-on-one mentoring, opportunities to present results at conferences, and guidance and support transitioning to their next career stage.
The terms of employment which would be a year, with a possibility of renewal, include a competitive salary and other benefits (including the possibility of reasonably priced housing owned by NYU). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning July 1, 2025.
NYU provides a stimulating and vibrant environment for those interested in theoretical chemistry and biophysics. The Hocky research group is housed in a newly renovated theory suite in the Chemistry department, along with five other theory groups. The Chemistry department is located in the heart of Manhattan, next to Washington Square Park. We are adjacent to the Center for Soft Matter Research (one of the top places for soft matter and active matter research in the world), and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (one of the top Applied Math departments in the world, featuring many experts in relevant computational methods). There are also four other theory faculty in the Chemistry departments at NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai. NYU currently has a large shared computational cluster, with plans for continual expansion. We are also members of the Simons Center for Computational Physical Chemistry, which provides a world class training environment, more details at http://wp.nyu.edu/sccpc.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $62,500 - $62,500. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
The successful applicant will have experience in molecular modeling and simulation and must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Biophysics, or a related field and a firm knowledge of equilibrium statistical mechanics.
A candidate should have experience programming in python, bash scripting, use of various sized computing resources, and skills running common Molecular Dynamics packages such as Gromacs, Amber, LAMMPS or similar. The ideal candidate would also have experience and interest in enhanced sampling simulation techniques such as Umbrella Sampling, Metadynamics, the String Method, Thermodynamic Integration, etc.
To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter summarizing research experience and specifying specific motivation for this position; a curriculum vitae (including a full list of publications); a statement of research interests; and two letters of reference.
