About the Job

Postdoc position in research on mineral carbon storage

We are seeking an individual to fill a postdoctoral research position associated with the center on Geo-processes in Mineral Carbon Storage (GMCS), funded through the Energy Frontier Research Centers by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, US Department of Energy. The main objective of GMCS is to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of the key interacting and multi-scale processes that are necessary to achieve a successful carbon storage operation. This will require cohorts of engineers and scientists, from across the spectrum of geomechanics, geochemistry, porous media flow, reactive transport, and sensing technologies, to work in concert towards the common mission of developing the fundamental science that will lead to realizing the potential for the subsurface storage of CO2 through mineralization.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, or a related field. The candidate must have a strong background in solid mechanics, inverse problems, and wave propagation. Knowledge of poromechanics is preferred but not required. Also of importance are communication skills and being able to work with the senior investigators, other post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students. In addition, the postdoc will be required to: (1) attend and participate in weekly meetings; (2) supervise graduate students who are also working in the center; (3) generate results in a timely manner for sharing with other members of the center; (4) write monthly reports and present seminars; and (5) prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Job Duties:

  • 30% Developing and implementing elastography-based data analytics to reconstruct the maps of elastic and dissipative properties of ultramafic rocks before and after thermally- and chemically-induced damage
  • 20% Collaborating with a PhD student in the design and implementation of ultrasonic measurements on ultramafic rock specimens by laser Doppler vibrometry
  • 30% Processing the ultrasonic data
  • 10% Writing reports and manuscripts; presenting results
  • 10% Working with project personnel

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

● PhD in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, or a related field

● Experience with developing and implementing elastography-type inverse solutions to characterize heterogeneous solid specimens from interior deformation measurements

● Experience with ultrasonic measurements using laser Doppler vibrometry

● An ability to work independently and work effectively with a large team

Preferred qualifications include:

● Experience with poromechanics
