Anticipated Initial Appt Period: Early 2026 (total 2-3 yr potential appt)
Salary Range: $62,232 - $65,000 annually
The corn and soybean pathology lab in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Minnesota is seeking a motivated Post-doctoral Associate to conduct research on tar spot disease of corn. The fungal plant pathogen Phyllachora maydis is the causal agent for tar spot of corn, a spreading disease in the continental U.S. and Canada that can significantly reduce corn yield. This project will build on recent research and address information gaps related to disease risk and management of tar spot. The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting research on the biology and management of this disease, with particular focus on the disease cycle/ecology and the influence of environmental and biotic factors on the pathogen and disease. Research will be conducted in laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse and field environments. The Post-Doctoral Associate position will provide further development of career skills and allow opportunities to learn new research techniques. Note: This is not a position to which permanent residency can be granted for international appointees.
Job Duties:
- (80%) Conduct research on tar spot biology and management on campus and in the field.
- (16%) Prepare and edit manuscripts for publications and prepare presentations
- (4%) Mentor undergraduate students
Qualifications
Required
- Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, mycology, or related discipline
- Demonstrated experience in conducting research on biology of plant pathogens
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proven record of writing peer-reviewed publications and presenting scientific results
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must have a driver’s license and be able to work in field environments
- Background in mycology and fungal plant diseases
- Experience with DNA isolation, sequencing, and analysis
- A solid background in research design and experimental analysis
- Experience with inoculation of plants with pathogens and assessment of disease
- Experience in research on plant diseases in lab., greenhouse, and field environments
- Experience with isolation, culturing, and characterization of microbes from plant tissue
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $62,232 - $65000 annually ; depending on education/qualifications/experience
