Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics or a related field, completed by the start of the appointment,
  • Previous programming experience (in languages such as R, Matlab, Python, or Stata), as gained through past coursework, past independent research, past work experience, or past research experience,
  • Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm in applying programming experience to economic research and economic policy work,
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently,
  • Attention to detail,
  • Excellent problem-solving skills,
  • Creativity,
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills

Preferred:

  • For a subset of projects whose work blends qualitative and quantitative research, the ideal candidate should not only have skills and interest in constructing and analysing data but also in undertaking qualitative, institutional, and historical work needed to interpret the data in context.
  • A strong mathematical background (including multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and higher-level math coursework such as real analysis).
  • A long-term interest in pursuing research related to economics and economic policy.
  • An interest in pursuing a PhD in Economics.

This position is eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship for eligible candidates. Employment is contingent on authorization to work in the United States.

Description:

The Department of Economics at Dartmouth College invites applications for a Postbaccalaureate Fellow, at the rank of postgraduate research associate, with interests in gender, labor economics, and development economics. The fellow will work with Professors Madeline McKelway and Claudia Olivetti.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing high-quality OCR and manual data entry from historical PDF sources into structured databases or spreadsheets.
  • Merging newly digitized data with contextual sources (e.g., Census microdata, agricultural statistics) and performing statistical analysis on the resulting data set.
  • Reviewing and replicating existing analyses to ensure accuracy.
  • Compiling de-identified files for primary data sources.
  • Building reproducible data and analysis pipelines, documentation, and metadata to support public data release.
  • Coordinating and providing guidance to undergraduate research assistants working on the projects.
  • Serving as a teaching assistant, which will involve offering office hours, supporting the professors in the development of student evaluations, and assisting in grading.

Postbaccalaureate Fellows (PBFs) work with faculty supporting and conducting scholarly research and teaching in anticipation of advancing their skills and experience to prepare for the next stage of their careers. PBFs are expected to contribute to all stages of research - including research design, literature searches, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data and writing reports and papers. PBFs may also have the opportunity to contribute in the classroom or in laboratory sections of courses, helping undergraduate students with labs, review sessions, paper editing and grading certain assignments.

This position is full-time at Dartmouth College with an expected start date of July 1, 2026, though an earlier start date is possible. The appointment will last through June 30, 2027, with the possibility of a 1-year extension upon satisfactory performance. The salary will be $60,000 per year, plus fringe and benefits.

PBFs working in residence in Hanover, NH are eligible for Graduate Special Student status and the ability to take certain Dartmouth courses with the tuition paid by Dartmouth as a working condition fringe benefit. The benefit covers a maximum of 1 course per academic year the PBF is employed and in residence at Dartmouth.
