Position Summary
Professor Kelly K Baker at the Center for Climate Change and Health Equity, University at Buffalo is seeking a postdoctoral scholar with expertise in aquatic ecology and infectious disease to conduct research on mechanisms of guinea worm infection for domestic dogs and cats in Ethiopia to support national guinea worm elimination campaign efforts by the Government of Ethiopia and the Carter Center. The scholar will conduct translational research that integrates ecological knowledge of local flora and the guinea worm life cycle with quantitative exposure data on dog and cat movement, then generate maps of high-risk transmission locations that can be used to focus disease elimination program efforts. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in aquatic or landscape ecology, parasitology, environmental sustainability or conservation, or environmental health, with expertise in implementing research in rural and/or global field settings. This position is for two years, conditional upon satisfactory evaluation at one year, and based in Buffalo, New York with frequent global travel to Ethiopia.

Ideal candidates will be highly motivated and able to:
  • Independently lead the existing project and collaborate on new research projects based upon emerging findings.
  • Work collaboratively in a team-oriented setting, including training and oversight of some Ethiopia-based field staff.
  • Travel to Ethiopia up to four times per year and/or spend up to 3 months at the study site per visit.
  • Maintain detailed, organized documents, datasets, and other records of study progress.
  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and reports to funders and partners.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate study results to community and governmental partners, the funder, and to science audiences at conferences.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree or equivalent degree in ecology, one health, microbiology, veterinary medicine, public health, or related field with demonstrated expertise in conducting research in rural and/or global field settings and ability to travel internationally periodically.

Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in aquatic ecology and infectious disease in Ethiopia or east African nations. Expertise with quantitative and spatial methods.

Salary Range
$56,000 - $60,000
