Yale University invites applications for 3 one-year postdoctoral fellowships in the Humanities Program, to begin July 1, 2025. Each appointment is renewable, conditional upon favorable review, for up to two additional one-year terms. Candidates in any field of the Humanities and humanistic Social Sciences are welcome to apply. The Postdoctoral Associate will also have standing to hold a secondary appointment as a Lecturer and will teach one section of Directed Studies every semester. Additional responsibilities will include organizing Directed Studies colloquia and planning other enrichment activities. In the course of their three-year appointment, they will also have the option to design and teach their own course, in consultation with the Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies of the Humanities Program. The Postdoctoral Associate will be invited to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Humanities Program and will have ample opportunities to present their research.

Qualifications

All applicants must have completed their PhD or equivalent terminal degree by the time of appointment.

Application Instructions

Applicants should provide:

1) A cover letter (1000 words maximum) that explicitly describes their past and future research, their teaching experience, and the motivation for teaching in Yale’s Directed Studies program. 

2) A teaching statement (500 words maximum) describing their specific approach and goals in engaging first-year students in the DS program. Applicants are asked to choose one text from the DS syllabus (https://directedstudies.yale.edu/ds-syllabi) and describe their approach to teaching a discussion section devoted to that work.

Note: The year-long DS program is a collaborative, integrated set of three courses in literature, philosophy, and historical & political thought, for a group of 120 first-year students. Instructors in DS typically give one lecture per semester to the entire program; lead a 75-minute discussion section twice a week; and offer feedback on student writing.

3) A research plan (500 words maximum) describing their specific goals for the duration of the postdoctoral fellowship. 

4) The names of three recommenders. 

5) A CV.
