Postdoctoral Fellow (PREP0003397)
Job Details
Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.
Salary: $80,000-$85,000 a year
Description
PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Project Plan: The work will build on PML’s current optomechanical accelerometry research and develop sensing optimized for inertial measurement. New sensors will be designed, modeled, fabricated, and fully packaged for deployment. Sensor performance will be measured in the lab and new techniques will be developed to characterize performance for inertial sensing. This supports PML work in Positioning, Navigation and Timing, as well as the national interest in developing this Critical Emerging Technology. This is applied research.
The work will entail:
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Designing new optomechanical sensors for inertial measurement
- Fabricating devices in the NIST NanoFab, including packaging
- Testing the sensors in the lab and measuring sensor performance
- Performing acceleration measurements using the sensors
- Assessing the uncertainty and other performance metrics of the sensors
- Participating in field tests.
Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 3 years of relevant experience after the Master’s degree or a Doctorate degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Ability to develop experimental apparatus using optics.
- Ability to perform laboratory optical experiments.
- Ability to analyze and model data.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
