The research group of Prof. Ewa Stępień invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the OPUS project entitled „High-throughput PET imaging by decoding multi-photon signals on long axial field-of-view PET using physics-guided artificial intelligence"
Project description:
This Polish-Swiss collaborative project aims to achieve a breakthrough in positronium lifetime imaging using a clinical PET scanner combined with artificial intelligence. While conventional PET measures only radiotracer concentration, recording multi-photon annihilation reveals critical details about the tissue microenvironment. A major challenge—complex image reconstruction and low triple-coincidence statistics—will be addressed by developing physics-informed deep learning models. Focused on prostate cancer imaging, the research integrates Monte-Carlo simulations, phantom measurements, and histopathology across cell cultures, animal models, and clinical patients. The expected results include the first-ever clinical positronium imaging of prostate cancer, novel acquisition protocols, and deep insights into the underlying pathophysiology. Ultimately, this methodology will enhance PET diagnostic accuracy and throughput while reducing patient radiation exposure and operational costs.

The selection procedure is open for all individuals, who meet the requirements set out in Articles 113 and 116.2.3) of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, and who meet the following eligibility criteria according to § 165 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University:
- holding at least a doctoral degree;
- having relevant scientific achievements;
- taking active part in scientific life.
Specific Requirements

- doctoral degree in natural sciences (physics, molecular biology, biophysics), computer science, chemistry, biomedical engineering or a related field of science (in accordance with the regulations of the National Science Center, a document certifying the doctoral degree may be provided at the time of signing the contract);
- experience in the construction and calibration or operation of radiation detectors;
- experience in advanced multi-level data analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations;
- experience in advanced statistical inference and computer programming;
- experience in 3D cell culture, biochemical methods and microscopic cell imaging techniques;
- experience of working with radioisotopes;
- experience in working with laboratory animals.

- statement under Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science,
- statement on acknowledging and accepting the rules and regulations concerning intellectual property management and commercialisation in force at the Jagiellonian University.

Selection process
The first stage of the selection procedure is the formal assessment of the submitted documents. Applications which meet all formal requirements are the subject of substantive assessment, during which an interview with the Candidate (F/M) may be conducted (directly or via electronic communication channels), upon settling the date of the interview with the Candidate (F/M). During the interview, the soft competencies indicated in the announcement will also be verified.
The Candidate (F/M) has the right to appeal against the negative assessment by the selection board within 7 days from receiving the information about the results of the assessment.
The selection procedure is conducted in accordance with The Policy of Open, Transparent and Merit-Based Recruitment Process at the Jagiellonian University.
