Postdoctoral Research Associate
Job Summary
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will support initiatives within the Freshwater Algal Laboratory at Florida Gulf Coast University. This position provides an outstanding opportunity for an early-career researcher to engage in collaborative, grant-funded research focused on harmful algal blooms (HABs), water quality, cyanobacteria, and algal ecology. The successful candidate will work alongside faculty, laboratory technicians, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers to advance scientific understanding of cyanotoxin production, bloom dynamics, and innovative mitigation strategies.
Job Description
Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research examining the effects of nutrient enrichment on cyanotoxin gene expression and production in cyanobacteria.
- Design, implement, and evaluate laboratory and field-based experiments focused on the prevention and control of harmful algal blooms.
- Analyze experimental data and develop recommendations for future research directions based on project outcomes.
- Assist in the development and execution of grant-funded research projects related to water quality and harmful algal bloom management.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot specialized laboratory and field equipment, including: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) systems, Imaging Flow Cytobot, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Biological Safety Cabinets and related laboratory instrumentation.
- Perform molecular and genetic analyses to characterize cyanotoxin production potential in cyanobacterial populations.
- Collect, process, and analyze environmental samples from field locations.
- Collaborate with laboratory personnel, students, and external partners on research activities and project objectives.
- Prepare technical reports, research summaries, and progress updates for funding agencies and stakeholders.
- Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
