Postdoctoral Research Associate in Automated Electrolyser Optimisation - Fixed term/Full time

A postdoctoral research associate is sought to develop high‑throughput platforms for rapid optimisation of low‑temperature electrolysers.

Electrolysers offer a route to produce vital feedstocks such as green hydrogen and CO/ethylene from CO₂ reduction, but optimisation is complex, involving interdependent variables across catalysts, supports, ionomers and operating conditions.

Working as part of the research group of Professor Alex Cowan in the Department of Chemistry and the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy you will create an integrated platform with comprehensive data logging, enabling efficient exploration of this multidimensional space. Working with the colleagues at the University of Liverpool, you will also help develop process‑optimisation algorithms toward autonomous operation and long‑term stability under variable loads.

This post is funded through GB Chemicals, a UKRI‑supported National Research and Innovation Centre developing scalable, sustainable technologies for defossilising chemical manufacturing.

The position sits within the Centre’s Moonshot programme, focused on ambitious new approaches to sustainable chemical production.

The post is offered on a fixed term basis for up to 18 months.

If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
