Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biostatistics - PH 352

The Department of Biostatistics at Brown University is seeking a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral research associate position interested in developing statistical methods for modeling medical imaging data. The position will include opportunities to collaborate with clinicians and researchers studying neurological disorders, develop methods for longitudinally collected positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging data among other imaging modalities, machine learning methods for prediction, treatment effect estimation, and contribute to understanding brain biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease and their role in treatment effect estimation. The postdoctoral associate will be primarily mentored by Dr. Ani Eloyan with opportunities for collaborating with other faculty members in the Brown University Department of Biostatistics and the Carney Institute for Brain Science. The position is for 1 year, with the potential to extend to two.

Training Environment and Career Development

The postdoctoral associate will receive mentorship from Dr. Eloyan and collaborating faculty and will be encouraged to:

  • Publish first-author and collaborative manuscripts in high-impact statistical and clinical peer-reviewed journals
  • Advance their training in modeling brain imaging data, treatment effect estimation, and high-dimensional data modeling
  • Develop skills for independent research in biostatistics and its applications in imaging
  • Present research based on their work at scientific conferences

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop methods for modeling brain imaging data for evaluation of treatment effects in Alzheimer’s Disease including manifold learning, topological data analysis, and dimension reduction techniques for biomarker estimation and causal inference methods for treatment effect evaluation. The models will then be implemented by the candidate to model longitudinally collected imaging data in large observational studies such as the Alzheimer’s disease neuroimaging initiative and the longitudinal early-onset Alzheimer’s disease study. Specific responsibilities include: developing statistical models, software implementation, writing and publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to collaborative projects.

Appointment Details

The initial appointment is for 1 year, with potential renewal contingent upon performance and funding availability. Salary is competitive and depends on research experience.

Visas

For this position, Brown offers only the J-1 visa classification to scholars who need immigration sponsorship in order to enter the U.S. and commence lawful employment under the terms of their appointment.

Qualifications include a PhD degree or equivalent in biostatistics, statistics or related quantitative field with considerable knowledge and experience using the R software. Candidates with experience in dimension reduction, deep learning, machine learning, modeling neuroimaging data are especially encouraged to apply. Excellent written and communication skills are required.

To apply, please submit a cover letter including your relevant research experience and the date when you will be available to begin, CV, and contact information of two reference letter writers via Interfolio. Applicants must have completed all PhD requirements prior to starting work. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Applications from women and minority candidates are encouraged.
