Job Description: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will support a NASA funded hydroponics and aquaponics project with emphasis on Metabolomics research in the Bowie State University Plant Metabolomics and Hydroponics and Aquaponics laboratory. The Postdoc will also participate in Endophyte research and will provide needed support for the Undergraduate Research students in the lab.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Postdoctoral/research fellow will responsible for coordinating all Plant metabolomics/Hydroponics and Aquaponics research and hands-on laboratory activities associated with Undergraduate Research Experience (REU).
  • Evaluate the metabolome and functional traits of kale/plants grown hydroponically under microgravity environment.
  • Elucidate how the Simulated Microgravity affects the Photosynthetic efficiency of the Kale plants in hydroponically grown under microgravity system compared with the soil system.
  • Conduct Endophyte Research
  • Help in the development of a new Plant Science / Smart Agriculture Program.
  • Development of HPTLC-MS, HPTLC methods for analyzing for analyzing compositional variability of plant samples.
  • Collecting plants from all over the world, Processing of plant samples
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in research.
  • Compile technical reports for publication of results in peer reviewed journals.
  • Write grants to support plant science Laboratory
  • Write scientific papers from the work done.
  • Assist the PI to run the Plant metabolomics/Hydroponics/Aquaponics lab
  • Perform any other task assigned by the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Mentor undergraduate students
  • Perform duties as assigned by the PI, Dr Osano.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: The candidate should have a PhD in Chemistry, Plant Science or related fields.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of scientific analysis techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, titration, electrochemistry, X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermal analysis.
  • Skills of preparing culture media (growth media, growth regulators, Murashige and Skoog (MS) media) for cultivation of endophytes
  • Skills in Plant cultivation and green house work/research
  • Proven track record of scientific publications in high quality peer reviewed scientific journals.
  • Proactive, innovative and independent problem solver and excellent team player.
  • Supervision of students (undergraduates, MSc-students, co-supervise PhD researchers).
  • Excellent communication skills, able to interact with a multi-cultural team of researchers
  • Ability to deal with high workload and capacity to work under challenging situations.
  • Knowledgeable in troubleshooting
  • Skills in grant and research proposal writings
  • Proficiency in English and communication techniques.
