Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Position Summary
The Department of Classics and Humanities at San Diego State University invites applications for a one-year appointment (possibly renewable for a second-year contingent upon performance and funding availability) for The Schuch Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Classics. The Schuch Fellowship is designed to allow newly completed PhDs adequate time for research, while teaching a lower course load in classics and mentoring students in the major. The selected fellow will engage in comprehensive research, teaching, and mentoring experience. Applicants should be prepared to teach courses in Greek and/or Latin language and literature at all undergraduate levels and to offer lecture courses in classical literature, world mythology, and culture in translation. The Fellow will teach three courses each academic year, achieve significant progress on a research project, give a public presentation at the end of the year, and participate in the intellectual life of the department and campus.
Position Information

- This is a 12-month appointment beginning July 1, 2026 (possibly renewable for a second-year contingent upon performance and funding availability).
- Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

The Department of Classics and Humanities offers interdisciplinary courses in language, literature, visual media, and culture.
Through the study of texts and contexts past and present, local and global, students engage with the diversity of historical narratives, lived experiences, and perspectives that comprise 'the human experience' in and across various times and places.

Education and Experience
- The successful appointee must have received their Ph.D. between July 1, 2022, and June 1, 2026.
- Demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation:
The appointment offers a salary of $65,000 per year.
