Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Research Assistant to join a project aimed at advancing scientific understanding of how environmental dynamics and coupled phenomena impact long-term resiliency of bentonite-based containment barriers. The results will improve prediction of how contaminants escape through clay barriers over time, supporting design of resilient barrier systems and improved protection of public health and the environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Conduct experimental research on coupled phenomena in bentonite, with emphasis on contaminant transport properties.
• Continue development and refinement of novel testing systems and methods.
• Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through high-quality academic publications, presentations, and community outreach.
• Train of graduate and undergraduate researchers.
• Participate in generating new ideas and writing.
• Assist with educational activities and events associated with the education plan in the grant.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree in engineering or closely related field
• Good organizational and communication skills
• The ability to work independently and communicate proactively
• Highly motivated with strong written and oral communication skills.
• Direct experience with experimental research in a geotechnical/geoenvironmental lab.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with advanced testing methods to measure properties of clays (e.g., flexible-wall hydraulic conductivity, diffusion, cation exchange capacity).
• Experience with development of novel testing equipment and procedures.
• Record of disseminating scholarly work through conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
