Power Engineering Manager - 528484
Job Summary
The Power Engineering Manager oversees day-to-day operations of the Alabama Mobility & Power (AMP) Center, with responsibility for advancing high-voltage research capabilities, energy management strategies, and next-generation charging technologies, including autonomous mobile charging and inductive wireless systems. Leads the design, development, and integration of advanced power generation, distribution, and grid resiliency technologies.
Additional Department Summary
Oversees high-voltage equipment, simulation platforms, and testbeds to accelerate the readiness of scalable solutions as the Center’s technical authority for power systems and infrastructure. Collaborates with AMP’s Executive Director, faculty, students, industry partners, utilities, and government agencies to transition breakthrough research into resilient and deployable energy systems that support the electrification of transportation. Ensures compliance with safety and reliability standards while driving innovation in grid-interactive power systems, decentralized energy integration, and EV charging infrastructure.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electric power, energy engineering, power systems engineering, or energy systems engineering or related field and six (6) years of experience in power generation, distribution, or grid integration; OR master's degree in in electrical engineering, electric power, energy engineering, power systems engineering, or energy systems engineering or related field and four (4) years of experience in power generation, distribution, or grid integration.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge
Knowledge of utility safety protocols, interconnection standards, and reliability requirements. Familiarity with EV charging technologies and distributed energy integration. Demonstrated expertise with high-voltage DC/AC systems, switchgear, and power electronics. Proven track record in managing large-scale power infrastructure projects, including commissioning of equipment and oversight of technical teams.
Deep understanding of grid-scale storage integration, load management, and distributed control systems. Experience in advanced charging systems, including L1~3 charging units, inductive/wireless charging, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies. Familiarity with high-voltage test systems, simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD, PSS/E, MATLAB/Simulink), and grid-interactive microgrids. Demonstrated success in transitioning power system innovations from R&D to deployment. Experience collaborating with utilities, national labs, or standards bodies on grid modernization. Strong publication or patent record in power systems and charging innovation.
Preferred Qualifications
Ten (10) or more years of industry or research experience in power systems engineering with emphasis on resiliency, microgrids, or renewable integration.
