Background Industry predictions of flow-induced noise are typically based on British standards, but has limitations, particularly for narrowband noise. There is a clear need to evaluate and extend existing standards-based methods and compare them with analytical, experimental, and computational approaches.
This project will:
- design a test rig for the accurate measurements of the noise generated by valves and pumps under controlled laboratory measurements
- generate high-quality experimental data (flow, pressure, broadband and narrowband noise) for validation
- compare predictions obtained from British Standards with experimental data
- investigate fundamental noise generation mechanisms.
The research is closely aligned with industry needs, with opportunities for collaboration and on-site placements at Rolls-Royce. You will also undertake some Master courses in sound and vibration.

Entry requirements
You must have a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in engineering or physics.
You should have a strong background in mechanical, acoustics, or fluid engineering, together with an interest in experimental research, noise and vibration, and fluid dynamics.
You must be a UK national.
Fees and funding
For UK students, tuition fees will be paid and you'll receive a tax-free living stipend.
50% of the funding is provided by Rolls-Royce, together with a £5,000 uplift, and the remaining 50% is funded by the University of Southampton.
